Battersea Power Station

That this House remembers that in June 1988 the Prime Minister attended a ceremony at Battersea Power Station, referring to it as 'the wonderful example of private enterprise and local government working hand in hand for the benefit of Britain', that she congratulated the developer, John Broome, who was subsequently honoured, on 'seizing the opportunity not only to save this magnificent building, but to put it to work again for the nation ... this colossal undertaking has that touch of pure genius that has always made Britain great' and that the Prime Minister then undertook to be present at the opening ceremony on 21st May; notes that she failed to keep this appointment as the building is now a desolate, empty hulk, with the west wall and roof removed and that the building work stopped some time ago; is concerned that a building which was sold to the developer by the Central Electricity Generating Board for ú1.5 million may well become unsafe and beyond repair, thereby giving the developer an empty site worth over ú100 million; believes this whole situation to be a major scandal; urges an immediate investigation of the circumstances; and believes that the Prime Minister should take action to re-acquire the building, get it repaired and ensure it is then used for the benefit of the people of Battersea.
