Meat Incorporating A Gel Containing Blood Enzymes
Matthew Taylor
1990-02-13
That this House notes that a technique has been developed in Holland which uses a gel containing blood enzymes and which has the capability of sticking together scraps of meat so as to make the final product appear like a prime cut of beef; further notes that such scraps may be mechanically recovered meat; suggests that the public can accrue no benefit from such techniques and that the only persons who stand to gain are those who are able to persuade the public into buying an inferior product, believing it to be something else; condemns the cynical and opportunist nature of those seeking to exploit this technology at the expense of consumers; and therefore calls upon the Government to make its position in respect of this technology crystal clear and to ensure that, if any meat products subject to this technique are to be allowed for sale in this country, they be clearly labelled 'artificially restructured meat'.
