Mineworkers Pensions
Dafydd Wigley
1992-02-17
That this House notes the recent surplus of ú1.4 billion unearthed by the Mineworkers' Pension Fund; further notes that, despite the surplus, retired miners are still only granted a pittance of a pension which actually leaves them just above the threshold for claiming income support; believes that many ex-miners and their widows are caught in a poverty trap due to their earning more than the income support threshold which means that they cannot claim free eye tests or EEC allocation of surplus supplies and are means-tested when requiring home improvement grants; calls on the trustees of the Mineworkers' Pension Fund to take immediate steps to upgrade the level of ex-mineworkers' weekly benefits; and congratulates the Plaid Cymru Mayor of Lliw Valley Borough Council, Councillor W. J. Evans, for initiating the campaign for a decent pension for ex-mineworkers.
