Safety Of Magnox Nuclear Power Stations.
Paul Flynn
1991-11-07
That this House is convinced that the request by Nuclear Electric to the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate for a relaxation of operating procedures to allow reactor one at Trawsfynydd to restart is an attempt to erode existing safety margins; notes that this is the most severely corroded and embrittled reactor of the magnox system, and that especially vulnerable are the gas outlet valves, the failure of which could cause a sudden loss of pressure leading to a core collapse resulting in ignition of both fuel and graphite; welcomes the refusal of the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate to grant an operating licence to Hinkley A beyond the end of 1991; and calls for a thorough review of the safety of welds on the similar reactors of Bradwell, Dungeness A and Sizewell.
