Liberal Democrats And Prescription Charges
David Lidington
1994-03-29
That this House deplores the publication and distribution of a leaflet by the Liberal Democrats in the Portsmouth area (Focus on St. Jude, Spring 1994), which describes the rise in prescription charges as 'another tax increase that will hit pensioners and those on low incomes hard'; notes that pensioners are totally exempt from prescription charges as are those on income support and family credit; recognises that the Liberals, in their desperate scramble for votes, have put about a wicked falsehood designed to scare vulnerable people; demands that the Leader of the Liberal Party instructs those responsible to withdraw the leaflet and apologise for such unprincipled scaremongering; and recalls that this is a further example of Liberal dirty tricks, following their disgraceful Tory Hamlets leaflet in which, in the words of their own inquiry, Liberal party workers were caught 'pandering to racism'.
