British Bird Population

That this House is alarmed by recent figures, published by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, showing a marked reduction in once common bird species, such as the song thrush, down 54 per cent., bullfinch, down 67 per cent., lapwing, down 50 per cent., reed bunting, down 59 per cent., grey partridge, down 73 per cent., tree sparrow, down 80 per cent., and turtle dove, down 72 per cent.; commends the long term monitoring of wild bird populations by members of the British Trust for Ornithology and congratulates the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds for launching a campaign to finance future research; and calls upon the Government to support the work of these two organisations and halt the decline of bird populations in Britain by creating the right incentives for new farming methods and protecting wildlife habitats throughout the United Kingdom.
