Skye Bridge Tolls
EDM number 1453 in 1994-95, proposed by Charles Kennedy on 16/10/1995.
That this House, noting the formal opening on 16th October of the Skye Bridge, records that at the outset people locally were assured that their wishes would be paramount over the matter; observes that when the Highland Regional Council voted to approve the privately-funded toll package all but one of its representatives from Skye and Lochalsh voted against the imposition; further emphasises that opposition to the level of tolls has led to the boycotting of the opening ceremony by both parliamentary and district council representatives from the area; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to acknowledge and act upon the manifest injustice of the communities of Skye and Lochalsh and the Western Isles having to suffer the most expensive toll regime in Europe.
