Success Of Tower Colliery

That this House applauds the miners of Tower Colliery in the Cynon Valley for their magnificent achievement in making a pretax profit of ú3.5 million in their first year of operation; records that the miners invested ú8,000 each to buy the pit and that they will receive a ú500 interim dividend before Christmas, followed in the New Year by a ú23 a week pay rise, and a 100 per cent. sickness pay scheme is to be set up; notes that production targets set by the miners themselves have been exceeded and that over ú1 million is to be reinvested in the pit; observes that British Coal and the Government said that they were closing the pit because there was no market for the coal, but that the company has found markets at home and abroad; calls on the Government to recognise the mistake they made in shutting the pit; and believes Tower is a fine example of a worker's co-operative which will provide an inspiration to many others.
