14111 1996-97 398 Tom Pendry 1997-01-14 That this House deplores the decision of Gallaher Limited to announce the loss of 950 jobs from their Hyde factory in Tameside during Christmas week; calls upon the company to reconsider this decision, given that in 1993 it publicly stated that it would be concentrating its manufacturing output on Hyde as this is where its commercial and geographical strengths lay; expresses concern that the decision of the Government to grant Gallaher Limited at least ú10 million to invest in a Northern Ireland site distorts fair market competition and will lead to a net reduction in United Kingdom employment; and calls upon the Government to provide the Tameside area of Greater Manchester with assistance to ensure that training and employment opportunities are made available to those workers who could be made redundant.
