Launch Of Cancer Research UK
Ian Gibson
2002-02-04
That this House welcomes the establishment of the new charity Cancer Research UK, formed on World Cancer Day as a result of the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and Imperial Cancer Research Fund, which will have an annual scientific budget of over ú130 million and a team of 3,000 dedicated researchers, doctors and nurses; notes that the merged charity is launching a major new investment programme of ú75 million, the biggest research initiative in Britain for 50 years; applauds the six primary aims of Cancer Research UK, namely to cure patients faster, to cut the numbers of people getting cancer, to bring better treatments to cancer patients, to train more cancer doctors, nurses and scientists for research, to be the authoritative source of information on cancer and to maximise resources available for cancer research; and hopes that the new charity will achieve every success in furthering these aims; and calls on the Government to increase spending on cancer treatment, especially to provide further oncologists, so that cancer patients in the UK can take full advantage of the research being carried out and receive the best possible care.
