Jazz In Britain
Kelvin Hopkins
2003-01-07
That this House recognises that Britain is a major contributor to the world of jazz and has produced many of the world's greatest jazz musicians; acknowledges that jazz in Britain is supported by a large and discerning audience and is a major component of Britain's arts and entertainment culture; notes that Britain's great jazz heritage has developed and been sustained by its many fine exponents learning and honing their skills playing in public houses; regrets that the playing of jazz in public houses has suffered from the restrictive and illogical 'Two-in-a-Bar' Rule; is concerned that the nation's great jazz heritage is now threatened by further restrictions in the Licensing Bill on the playing of jazz in pubs; and urgest the Government to ensure that the Licensing Bill does not lead to even greater constraints on the performance of jazz in public houses with a consequent loss of playing and listening opportunities and of employment for jazz musicians.
