Constantine 1700th Anniversary Exhibition In York
Hugh Bayley
2006-04-18
That this House notes that 25th July marks the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Constantine the Great as Roman Emperor in York and recognises that this is an anniversary of great historical importance that the United Kingdom should commemorate and celebrate; further notes that Constantine was the first Christian emperor, who ruled for more than 30 years, reunited the divided Roman Empire, reorganised the army and the civil administration of government, built Constantinople as the `New Rome' and allowed religious tolerance, thereby establishing Christianity throughout Europe; congratulates the York Museums Trust for organising a major international exhibition, supported by the British Museum, to illustrate the story of Constantine and his legacy to Europe and the rest of the world; and encourages the public to visit the exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum in York between 31st March and 29th October 2006.
