Bt Privacy Service (No. 2)
Sharon Hodgson
2006-04-18
That this House notes that in October 2005 the honourable Member for Gateshead East and Washington West expressed astonishment that British Telecom had no plans to alert paying customers to the fact that the BT Privacy Service had become free and that they said it was up to customers who subscribed in the past to request the change; recognises that this view was endorsed by many honourable Members from several parties; further notes that this led to discussions between the honourable Member for Gateshead East and Washington West and BT; congratulates BT for its consequent decision to alert customers who are still paying for a potentially free service via their bills for three months, and via its Update magazine, that they may sign up to BT Privacy which helps stop unsolicited sales calls and, if they make calls on the BT network, they could get BT Caller Display at no extra cost; and believes that this decision both redounds to the credit of BT and underlines the usefulness of cross-party and other pressures in persuading companies to become more customer friendly.
