Cyw Welsh Language Children's Channel
Hywel Williams
2010-11-16
That this House congratulates Cyw, the Welsh language children's channel, which has been nominated for Children's Channel of the Year in the British Academy Children's Awards, and Y Diwrnod Mawr, the first documentary series to be based around young children, which has been nominated in the UK Pre-School Live category; recognises the high quality of children's programming broadcast by Sianel Pedwar Cymru and the importance of educational and entertaining children's television for children's development and for the Welsh language; notes the importance of children's programming for the independent production sector in Wales as a way of developing media skills and maintaining employment throughout the country; expresses deep concern about the likely effect of significant budget cuts to the quality and quantity of programming available for Welsh-speaking and Welsh-learning children which has proven itself to be of such a high standard; and calls on the UK Government to ensure full editorial and commissioning independence and financial backing for Sianel Pedwar Cymru set out in the 1990 Broadcasting Act so that Wales can continue to bea producer of quality children's television, made for a Welsh audience, rather than a purchaser of television series which do not reflect the realities of being a Welsh-speaking child growing up.
