Humanitarian Situation In Syria
Ann Clwyd
2017-01-30
That this House is very concerned about the humanitarian situation in Syria, including the estimated two million civilians and opposition backers now kettled in Idlib and the half a million people trapped in the enclave of East Ghouta; notes with alarm that the Syrian regime, with the support of Russia and Iran, could heavily bomb these areas if there is any resistance, which would result in a massacre if humanitarian corridors are not opened; encourages the Syrian regime and its allies to commit to abiding by their commitments under international law to protect civilians and to ensure their basic needs can be met, including by allowing unfettered access for humanitarian organisations; and calls on the Government to work with the international community to do more to protect civilians in conflict areas in Syria and to ensure that those who commit serious and systematic violations of international humanitarian law are held to account.
