Prime Minister And Child Care
EDM number 1021 in 1989-90, proposed by Dawn Primarolo on 17/05/1990.
That this House is appalled at the Prime Minister's opposition to the provision of all-day nurseries; notes that she told women wanting to pursue a career to spend at least two afternoons a week with their children without acknowledging that most women work because of economic necessity and their employment will not allow time-off; further notes that her Government have blocked the implementation of the European Community Directive on Parental Leave, failed to introduce legislation to provide for job share schemes, career breaks, more state nurseries or any measures which would enable women to continue paid work, and that in fact her Government's policies have worsened women's employment rights; notes additionally that not all women are as wealthy as she is and that the employment of a nanny as she suggested is out of the question; and therefore calls on the Government to introduce immediately a comprehensive plan for child care and employment legislation which would enable both parents to work and care for their children if they wish.
