Campaign To Save Killay Marsh

EDM number 1042 in 1989-90, proposed by Alan Williams on 22/05/1990.

That this House calls upon Swansea City Council to end the use of Killay Marsh as a tip; accepts that planning permission was given in 1977 in response to concern expressed by parents about children's safety but notes that since then 28 acres have been filled and that only 16 acres remain; points out that since the planning consent was granted the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 has been passed, giving protection to many of the plants and animals on the site; asks the Council to recognise that there are few areas in and around Swansea which offer so rich a diversity of woodland, wet meadow and swamp flora and fauna; believes that the site has potential for use by schools as part of the science/environmental studies required by the national curriculum; is impressed that national as well as local conservation organisations support the cessation of tipping while the remaining site is still large enough to sustain so wide a range of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, butterflies, bats and species of plant; and recognises the problems faced by the Council in securing tipping areas, but believes that the ecological considerations require urgent action to preserve this site because of its amenity value to the people of Swansea.
