Future Of Hong Kong

EDM number 1117 in 1989-90, proposed by Nicholas Winterton on 14/06/1990.

That this House welcomes the long tradition in which the United Kingdom, in disengaging from the affairs of its colonies, has sought to plant within them the seeds of popular democracy; deeply regrets that in regard to Hong Kong and its people Her Majesty's Government is eschewing all political and moral responsibilities for their future; believes that the proposals in the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Bill will be as reassuring for the majority of those who reside in Hong Kong as an announcement by the Captain of the 'Titanic' on striking the iceberg that there was no need to panic because there were places in the lifeboats only for first class passengers and crew; urges Her Majesty's Government to look again at this problem and to bring forward proposals which give to the people of Hong Kong the right to control their own destiny; and hopes that Britain will not take her final leave from Asia in total disgrace.

This motion has been ammended, see 722A1.
