Closure Of Civil Service Club

EDM number 1145 in 1989-90, proposed by Alan Williams on 20/06/1990.

That this House deplores the decision of the South East England-based Civil Service Sports Council to close its club and sports ground in Swansea; deeply regrets its intention to sell for development a leisure site in an area of the city that has been under constant threat and attack by speculators; condemns the Civil Service Sports Council for its grab and run policy of capitalising the property value in Swansea to invest the proceeds in more affluent parts of the country; points out that in addition to the facilities provided to its members, the existing club provides a focal point for the local community and supports youth sports teams; and notes that in its obsession with obtaining the highest possible value for this site of nearly four acres the Civil Service Sports Council refuses to consider outside financial help to replace the present structurally unsound clubhouse.
