Workington Trades Hall Centre For The Unemployed

EDM number 1155 in 1989-90, proposed by DN Campbell-Savours on 21/06/1990.

That this House deplores the threatened closure of Workington's Trades Hall Centre for the unemployed which is facing a budget short fall of up to ú14,000 due to the cancellation of the Government's Community Employment Scheme; recognises that the need for the Centre is, paradoxically, increasing with the rising unemployment trend, nationally and acute staff cutbacks in local firms such as Leyland Bus, British Steel, Millers Footwear Ltd., and Albright and Wilson Ltd.; notes that between 3,500 to 6,000 direct and indirect job losses for West Cumbrians have been projected with the completion of THORP Contracts at Sellafield in the next 12 to 18 months alone; endorses the widespread local support for the Trade Hall Centre which, run at a very low cost and utilising the talent of voluntary helpers, have successfully assisted many unemployed people in finding employment; notes the support for the centre demonstrated by Workington Town Council's interim financial support of ú1,644; and calls on Allerdale District Council and Cumbria County Council to continue this valuable, cost effective and much needed local resource.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
