Maintaining The Royal Regiment Of Wales, the Royal Welch Fusiliers And The Welsh Guards
EDM number 1199 in 1989-90, proposed by Richard Livsey on 27/06/1990.
That this House recognises the distinct contribution made to the British Army by the Royal Regiment of Wales, the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the Welsh Guards; further notes that the Royal Regiment of Wales was formed in the 1960s as a result of the amalgamation of its distinguished predecessors, the South Wales Borderers and the Welch Regiment, and notes that soldiers of the South Wales Borderers had won more VCs, including those won at Rorke's Drift, than any other British regiment; recognises that more soldiers are recruited in Wales per head of the population than any other part of Britain; and, in view of the fact that Army regiments in Wales have previously been re-organised, believes that the Royal Regiment of Wales, the Royal Welch Fusiliers and the Welsh Guards should therefore remain in being and maintain their separate identities as a result of any current Ministry of Defence review of British Army units.
