Poll Tax Collection

EDM number 125 in 1989-90, proposed by Tony Benn on 30/11/1989.

That this House unreservedly condemns the action now being taken against people in Scotland who cannot, or, on principle, will not, pay the poll tax, and in particular the use of sheriffs' warrants to allow officials to break open and enter private houses to assess the value of personal possessions with a view to selling them against the wishes of their owners, or to arrest wages and other property, which represents a violation of basic human rights; notes that over half a million people in Scotland have so far not paid the poll tax; believes that this barbaric practice should be halted immediately; and calls upon other people to rally around those who are thus threatened.

This motion has been signed by a total of 16 MPs.
