The United Kingdom's and the Republic of Ireland's Attitudes to Europe

EDM number 1284 in 1989-90, proposed by Margaret Ewing on 17/07/1990.

That this House challenges those who have poured scorn on the idea of Scotland as an independent member of the European Community because of the nation's size, to draw a lesson from the stark difference between the Irish Government's constructive role in Community development during the past six months of its presidency which concluded with a Dublin summit agreeing to two inter-governmental conferences of profound importance, and the negative and destructive role of the United Kingdom Government over the past weeks and months as it has sowed within its policy a deep distrust of other nations and a disparagement of anything that does not conform to its little Englander view of Europe and the world and to note that the Community's appreciation of Ireland has grown and Irish influence increased while that of the United Kingdom has been diminished.

This motion has been ammended, see 355A1.
