Pensioners' Charter
EDM number 1288 in 1989-90, proposed by Ron Brown on 17/07/1990.
That this House welcomes the charter produced by the Scottish Old-Age Pensions Association; agrees that the basic state retirement pension should be calculated on the basis of 75 per cent. of adult male earnings for a couple and 50 per cent. for a single person, uprated at six monthly intervals; calls for the appointment of a specific Cabinet Minister for the elderly; supports the abolition of standing charges in respect of gas and electricity; believes that free travel should be granted to all pensioners using public transport; and urges the release of extra resources to provide more suitable housing for the elderly, as well as to reverse cuts in the National Health Service and the social services.
