Neglect Of The Environment By Southend Borough Council

EDM number 1309 in 1989-90, proposed by Simon Hughes on 19/07/1990.

That this House notes that the Conservatives have celebrated regaining control of Southend Borough Council in May by wiping a quarter of a million pounds off the budget for environmental improvements and undermining the Environmental Charter introduced by the previous Liberal Democrat administration, by pulling the rug from under Interface, a local paper collection charity, so that there are now no kerb-side waste paper collections in the borough, by axing daily litter-picks, and by ending completely the testing of bathing waters between October and May; and suggests no amount of magical illusions by the Secretary of State for the Environment or greenspeak from the Prime Minister can hide the fact that most Conservative-controlled councils have an appalling record on environmental matters, and that this will always be the inevitable consequence of a philosophy that puts the pursuit of private affluence before the community interest.
