Water Shortage Crisis And Water Privatisation

EDM number 132 in 1989-90, proposed by Richard Livsey on 01/12/1989.

That this House notes with grave concern the water levels in the Southern Region which have reached their lowest level since records began; notes also that according to the National Rivers Authority it now needs a winter 40 per cent wetter than average to restore normal reserves of water in the environment and that there is only a 1 in 20 chance of this happening; further notes that this situation has been brought about because the Government has failed to invest adequately in the maintenance of supply pipes and reservoirs; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to halt the privatisation of water and implement an action programme of essential investment to ensure that water supplies can be guaranteed to the consumer without the threat of restrictions on use as are currently being implemented throughout the greater part of Sussex and Kent.
