Disappearance Of Raoul Wallenberg
EDM number 1357 in 1989-90, proposed by David Atkinson on 25/07/1990.
That this House notes the 44th anniversary of Raoul Wallenberg's courageous struggle against the Nazis on behalf of the Hungarian Jewish community which resulted in the saving of 100,000 lives; further notes his unaccountable disappearance in the hands of the liberating Soviet forces, and, bearing in mind that despite the Soviet Union's statement in 1957 that it seemed probable from their records that he had died in 1947 under Stalin, there have been numerous reports that he has been sighted in Soviet prisons during the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's and as recently as 1981; and calls upon the Government to make further representation to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in order to discover his fate and ensure his release if he is still alive, and to introduce legislation conferring honorary British citizenship upon him in recognition of his selfless and courageous actions, thus following the lead taken by the United States of America, Canada, Israel, Australia and a number of other nations.
