Situation In Pakistan

EDM number 1399 in 1989-90, proposed by George Galloway on 15/10/1990.

That this House views with grave concern the situation in Pakistan and expresses its alarm at the treatment of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto; expresses its deep scepticism at the processes whereby and the purposes for which Ms Bhutto was manoeuvred out of office; is greatly troubled by the quality of the legal moves currently being made against her and the attempts made to interfere with her election campaign; notes that President Bush has declared that United States aid to Pakistan will be conditional upon the holding of free elections there on 24th October, with Ms Bhutto as a candidate; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to convey to the President of Pakistan their fears for the survival of the new democracy in Pakistan and for the safety and well-being of Benazir Bhutto and to request the presence of Her Majesty's Government's observers at the forthcoming elections.
