Flooding Of The River Cart In Glasgow

EDM number 1412 in 1989-90, proposed by Mike Watson on 16/10/1990.

That this House notes with concern that the River Cart flooded its banks at several places on the south side of Glasgow on 6th October, causing the evacuation of hundreds of homes, with consequent damage to their contents; further notes that occurrences of a similarly serious nature have been recorded, on average, every five years since 1908; believes it is both unreasonable and unacceptable for families living close to the River Cart to be subjected to fear and anxiety at times of extreme rainfall; and calls on the Secretary of State for Scotland to recognise the urgent need to prevent a recurrence, by making special funding available to enable the River Cart to be kept under control at all times.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
