Deaf Blind Awareness Week
EDM number 1419 in 1989-90, proposed by John Hannam on 17/10/1990.
That this House notes that 15th to 20th October is Deaf-Blind Awareness Week; congratulates the National Deaf-Blind League on their work to further the interests of deaf-blind people over the past 60 years; recognises that the 11,000 people in Britain who are both deaf and blind require specialist services; welcomes the Social Services Inspectorate report, Sign Posts, and is concerned that current provision for the deaf-blind is described by this report as seriously underdeveloped; and calls upon the Government to issue guidance to local authorities on their responsibilities to address the special needs of deaf-blind people in their community care plans, and to urge them to put into practice the recommendation of the Sign Posts report.
