Abolition Of Deemed Planning Consent

EDM number 1456 in 1989-90, proposed by Simon Hughes on 25/10/1990.

That this House notes with concern the Secretary of State for the Environment's decision not to call in Devon County Council application Number 90.0539.R4D which has allowed Devon County Council to deem itself planning permission for housing development within a Torbay Borough Council conservation area covering a landscape laid out by the distinguished Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel; deplores this failure by the Government to ensure the implementation of the fifth report from the Select Committee on the Environment which condemned the abuse of deemed planning consent procedures; and therefore calls upon Her Majesty's Government to introduce legislation at the earliest instance to abolish such abuses within our planning system.
