Liberal Democrat Action On Environment Friendly Purchasing Policies

That this House congratulates the Liberal Democrat Groups on Langbaurgh-on-Tees Borough Council, Adur District Council, Gordon District Council, South Somerset District Council, Colchester District Council, Richmond London Borough Council, Swale Borough Council, Tower Hamlets London Borough Council, Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Hackney London Borough Council, Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council, Eastleigh District Council, Sutton London Borough Council, Wiltshire County Council, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, Hastings Borough Council and Shepway District Council who have recognised the impact council purchasing decisions can have on the environment and have taken the following positive local action; banned the purchase of aerosols using chlorofluorocarbon propellants, and called on manufacturers to label their products, introduced recycled paper into council service, extended the use of recycled paper for stationary and other paper products, banned the purchase of tropical hardwoods, called on the timber trade to adopt the Friends of the Earth's Good Wood Guide, introduced the use of lead-free petrol and diesel, run local public awareness campaigns to encourage people to convert to unleaded petrol; and therefore calls on the Government to review its purchasing policies to ensure environmentally friendly products are being used.
