Magistrate Audrey Jennings And Smoking

EDM number 326 in 1989-90, proposed by John Home Robertson on 17/01/1990.

That this House notes the decision by Magistrate Audrey Jennings to impose a derisory fine of 25 pence and no costs against a man convicted of smoking on London Underground; notes her reported comments in court that, 'I would have thought that the British Transport Police had better things to do than harrass people for smoking on the tube'; further notes that this is a gross outrage and a gratuitous offence to all the survivors, relatives and friends involved in the King's Cross disaster, and will severely undermine the efforts of the fire brigade, the police and London Underground to save the lives of passengers; and calls for the dismissal of magistrate Audrey Jennings who has proved herself to be unwilling to enforce the law in an extremely important area involving the safety of the travelling public.

This motion has been signed by a total of 22 MPs.
