Community Health Councils Ln Wales
EDM number 355 in 1989-90, proposed by Alun Michael on 22/01/1990.
That this House is disturbed that proposals for reorganisation of community health councils in Wales have been put forward without any evaluation of the effectiveness of the existing pattern of organisation; notes that South Glamorgan, the smallest county in Wales by area, needs at least two community health councils in order to ensure adequate representation of local communities; considers it ludicrous to suggest that communities in Gwynedd, Clwyd, Dyfed and Powys be represented by a single community health council per county; believes that the special needs of the communities within counties like Gwent, Mid Glamorgan and West Glamorgan require a number of community health councils to represent communities within each county; considers that, as with Pembrokeshire, every area of Wales should be treated as a special area, because each is special to those who live in it; and calls on the Secretary of State for Wales to withdraw his present proposals, undertake a proper evaluation of existing community health councils and enable everyone who is concerned about the future of the NHS in Wales to participate in designing a system which can properly represent communities and their needs as well as monitoring quality of care and service delivery for all patients in the Principality.
