"women At The Top"

EDM number 395 in 1989-90, proposed by Emma Nicholson on 29/01/1990.

That this House congratulates Lady Howe on the Hansard Society Commission report, Women at the Top; takes note of the important conclusion that there remain formidable barriers which prevent women from getting to the top; calls for urgent consideration of the recommendation by the Commission to establish a Speaker's conference to consider the ways in which parliamentary and party practice and procedures place women at a real disadvantage; urges the Government to set an example of good practice by introducing more positive action to afford women access to training for work in the Civil Service where they are significantly under-represented; and urges the Government to make significant use of the taxation system to help relieve the shortage of high quality and affordable childcare, which is one of the principal barriers identified by the Commission and thereby ensure that this country ceases to underuse nearly one half of its talent.
