Supply Teachers Salary Cuts In West Glamorgan
EDM number 430 in 1989-90, proposed by Gwilym Jones on 01/02/1990.
That this House acknowledges the important role played in the education service by supply teachers; notes that teachers employed on short-notice contracts are paid for the duration of each contract at the rate the local education authority considers appropriate; further notes that Department of Education and Science Circular 12/89 drew local education authorities' attention to the Interim Advisory Committee's views on the setting of a standard low point on the main scale for such teachers; and therefore deplores the policy of the Labour-controlled West Glamorgan County Council in cutting the salaries of supply teachers by 36 per cent. and regrets the financial mismanagement by the county council which has led to the taking of a foolish and unnecessary decision which has reduced the morale of local teachers.
