Rail And Tube Fare Rises And The Taylor Report

EDM number 524 in 1989-90, proposed by Ronnie Fearn on 13/02/1990.

That this House condemns the recent rail and tube fare increases which have only added to public dissatisfaction with the transport network which is running beyond its capacity at present with many surface and underground trains carrying passengers in a cramped standing position because there are too few services to meet the demand for seats at peak times; notes that a reduction in the numbers of rail and tube passengers following the fare increases is unlikely as the only alternative is an overcrowded and exhausted road network; and therefore calls upon the Government to take note of the Lord Justice Taylor Report, which recommended all seater football stadiums, to see if an all-seater recommendation cannot be applied to the railway system following a massive increase in rail investment and subsidy, partly from the increased fare revenue, in the best interests of the public and the environment.
