Secretary of State's Refusal to Support the Mersey Tunnels

EDM number 554 in 1989-90, proposed by David Alton on 15/02/1990.

That this House notes the Secretary of State for Transport's refusal to provide any support for the Mersey Tunnels' historic debts; regrets that despite the breadth of all party support in Parliament he has not seen fit to receive formal consultations from the interested parties; notes that the Government appears willing to support the Humber Bridge specifically in order to avoid the burden of debt falling on community charge payers and yet with the economic strategic and social importance of the Mersey Tunnels has forced Mersey travel to precept the local community charge payers by ú8.00 per head; and calls on the Secretary of State to revoke his decision immediately and accept proper consultations before providing the support of the Mersey Tunnels that the region deserves.

This motion has been ammended, see 1174A1.
