North Sea Pollution

EDM number 676 in 1989-90, proposed by Malcolm Bruce on 08/03/1990.

That this House notes the glossy self-congratulatory content of the Conservative Party's party political broadcast on the environment; draws attention to the glib assurances, superimposed over the footage of a mother and baby, that the Government is caring for the North Sea; contrasts this pitiful propaganda with the unbiased reporting of the BBC's Nine O'clock News which immediately followed it, and which in its lead story revealed how this Government is bringing this country into disrepute amongst our European neighbours; and calls upon either the Secretary of State for the Environment or the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, depending who is responsible for failing to look after the North Sea this week, to stop its filthy habits in the North Sea, by ending immediately industrial waste dumping, by setting a timetable to end sewage sludge dumping by 31st December 1992, and by undertaking to reduce to zero inputs of toxic discharges to the North Sea by the year 2000.

This motion has been signed by a total of 11 MPs.
