Freedom, Regulation And Broadcasting

EDM number 693 in 1989-90, proposed by Teresa Gorman on 12/03/1990.

That this House notes that the advanced technology produced by capitalism is facilitating the widening of the viewer choice in television broadcasting; welcomes the initiative that has been shown in the United States of America by entrepreneurs who are proposing to establish a 108 channel television broadcasting satellite system; believes that powerful communication techniques such as these must also have the freedom to be developed by entrepreneurs in the United Kingdom; and urges Her Majesty's Government to urgently consider liberalising regulations to allow Britain to have its own satellite system offering an equivalent or even more advanced approach to increasing competition in communications and broadcasting.
