Poll Tax And Student Nurses In Parkside Health Authority

That this House is fearful of the circumstances of student nurses employed by Parkside Health Authority who start off their training living in Salton House, St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, in Westminster, with a poll tax of ú194 and who will be moved on to live in St. Charles Hospital, Kensington and Chelsea, with a poll tax of ú375 and later to Central Middlesex Hospital, Brent, with a poll tax of ú498; believes it is unfair that such student nurses moving at the behest of the health authority to these different locations will not receive any poll tax rebate and that they do not receive the full London weighting allowance; compares their position with student nurses operating in the same locations under Project 2000 who will be required to pay 20 per cent. of the relevant poll tax; and therefore believes if Parkside Health Authority is not to lose valuable nursing staff an immediate decision should be taken to increase the London weighting to take account of the differing poll taxes and that this arrangement should be funded by the Treasury.
