Hartlepool Labour Party Nomination

EDM number 78 in 1989-90, proposed by James Pawsey on 27/11/1989.

That this House notes the four page letter of complaint from the Secretary of Transport and General Workers' Union Branch 8/325 to the north-east Regional Organiser of the Labour Party in respect of the Parliamentary candidate for Hartlepool; observes that these complaints all concern the conduct of Mr Peter Mandelson and his supporters and include irregularity, disenfranchisement, harrassment, unsavoury canvassing and false promises; supports the Transport and General Workers' Union's view that Labour's selection in Hartlepool has become 'an utter shambles and travesty of fair play'; recalls that the excellent prospective Conservative candidate, Mr Graham Robb, was selected openly and fairly on a democratic ballot; and calls upon the Leader of the Opposition to dissociate himself publicly from Mr Mandelson and from what the Transport and General Workers' Union has described as 'a very sophisticated campaign full of dirty tricks'.

This motion has been signed by a total of 22 MPs.
