Glasgow East End Mothers And The Greater Glasgow Health Board

EDM number 85 in 1989-90, proposed by Jimmy Wray on 28/11/1989.

That this House views with increasing concern the failure of the Greater Glasgow Health Board to listen to professional advice and to the public when taking decisions; is aware that the University of Glasgow, the Obstetric Medical Advisory Committee and the Area Sub-Committee in Obstetrics and Gynaecology advised that the new maternity unit be built at the Royal Infirmary site where the maternity podium can accommodate up to 144 beds; rejects the secretive manner in which the decision to build the new maternity hospital was taken and the fact that no reasons have been given for such decision; notes that figures from the Greater Glasgow Health Board itself show that the Royal Maternity Hospital at Rottenrow is the busiest in Glasgow and attends 87 per. cent of women of the Eastern District; can see no reason to force Glasgow East End mothers to travel during pregnancy to unfamiliar areas and many times having to convey with them their small children, when this is precisely one of the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom with the lowest rate of car ownership; and calls for the urgent review of the decision to build the new maternity hospital at Stobhil and to appoint more members of the public and caring professionals to the Greater Glasgow Health Board.
