Labour's Policies on Local Government Finance

EDM number 887 in 1989-90, proposed by Andrew Welsh on 24/04/1990.

That this House condemns the Labour Party for being no better in their treatment of the Scots than the Tory Government; notes, from statements made by the Right honourable Member for Islwyn, and confirmed by his office, the fact that the Labour Party rejects the idea for a tax based on house prices, the roof tax, as a policy for England, but intends to put the Scots in the front line once again, by proposing its implementation in Scotland; further notes the amazing similarity of Labour's position on the timetable for implementation of their tax to the actions of the Tory Government, who made Scots the guinea pigs for their hated, immoral and unjust poll tax, by imposing it on Scotland a year earlier than England and Wales; calls on the Labour Party to stop treating the Scottish people with contempt and urges honourable Members to support the fairer system of local income tax based on ability to pay, as proposed by the Scottish National Party.
