Health Care In Lambeth

That this House notes with concern the effect of continued government underfunding of the West Lambeth Health Authority which has led to the closure of 60 acute beds, a 10 per cent. reduction in out-patient clinics, the closure of a day unit for the elderly, the closure of family planning services, and the permanent closure of 160 beds for long-stay mentally ill patients and their re-location into private nursing homes; notes that these cuts seriously threaten the provision of an adequate health service to the community; welcomes the signature of the Chairman of the West Lambeth Health Authority on the Royal College of Nursing petition in protest at these cuts; and calls on the Secretary of State for Health to provide adequate funding for the health authority to prevent the closure of beds.
