Education And The Government

That this House firmly rejects any attempt to reduce the education system to a training scheme for money makers; believes that the education system priority is to provide opportunities to all children to become good citizens by helping them to develop their own intellectual, moral, physical and aesthetic abilities; furthermore, sees a proper and comprehensive education as the best guarantee for a prosperous and peaceful future for our society and for each one of its members; reminds Her Majesty's Government that, in accepting the mandate of the electorate, they have committed themselves to properly discharge the duty to preserve and improve the education system; sadly concludes that Her Majesty's Government has not done so; deplores the treatment given by Her Majesty's Government to the teaching professions, badly paid and demoralised; protests at the attempts to introduce a system of rewards which value certain matters more than others with no other justification than the commercial one; and re-affirms its belief that education is primarily a direct responsibility of both parents and the state and that this system must give the children a comprehensive foundation as individuals and as responsible members of society.
