Romanian National Salvation Front

EDM number 972 in 1989-90, proposed by Martin Smyth on 10/05/1990.

That this House regrets that the National Salvation Front in Romania has used state control of television, radio and newsprint to limit the free expression of political opinion, making it virtually impossible to have free and fair elections; and therefore urges the Government, in collaboration with other Governments, to use their best endeavours, even at this late stage, to have greater freedom of political expression before elections are held, to ensure independent supervision of ballot boxes with observers present in the polling stations and at the count, and to ensure that the use of army personnel at polling stations be kept to a minimum and in no way be intimidatory.

This motion has been signed by a total of 10 MPs.
