Toxoplasmosis

EDM number 1027 in 1990-91, proposed by Emma Nicholson on 25/06/1991.

That this House notes with concern recent research which suggests 500 babies will be born each year in the United Kingdom infected with Toxoplasma Gondii, which may lead to severe disability; welcomes the Department of Health award of ú10,000 per year for three years to the Toxoplasmosis Trust; and calls on the Government to introduce a health education campaign advising pregnant women on how to avoid contracting the infection, and to establish a multi-centred study to confirm the incidence of infection during pregnancy in England, as has already been done in Wales and Scotland.
