International Support For Sierra Leone

EDM number 1042 in 1990-91, proposed by David Alton on 26/06/1991.

That this House calls on Her Majesty's Government to urgently raise the plight of Sierra Leone at the United Nations; recalls that during the Falkland Islands conflict the port of Freetown was made available to the Royal Navy and that Sierra Leone sent a medical team to support the international force sent to the Gulf; recognises that the disastrous events in neighbouring Liberia have led to one third of Sierra Leone being destabilised through incursions by Liberian rebel forces, leading to the deaths of 5,000 civilians since March; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to respond more effectively to the requests of Sierra Leone for military aid and technical assistance and to take more seriously the military threat to one of the United Kingdom's staunchest African allies.

This motion has been signed by a total of 18 MPs.
