Ballistic Missile Early Warning Station At Raf Fylingdales North Yorkshire

EDM number 1141 in 1990-91, proposed by Ronnie Fearn on 16/07/1991.

That this House notes with grave concern the potential dangers to vehicle motorists on the A169 Whitby to Pickering road due to interference with electronic functions such as the engine fuel injection, the ignition system and the antilock braking system from levels of electromagnetic radiation generated around the ballistic missile early warning station at RAF Fylingdales in North Yorkshire; notes that, despite the Ministry of Defence's assurance that there is no threat to civilian persons, a survey conducted by ELMAC Services concludes that 'vehicle borne electronics may be susceptible to interference of this level (in excess of 30V/m)....Interferences to these functions could cause a serious and potentially fatal road hazard'; therefore requests that the Ministry of Defence release detailed information regarding the strength of the electromagnetic radiation field and undertake a thorough investigation into potential hazards to road users.
